HOW TO CHOOSE A GARAGE FLOOR MAT

How do you choose a garage floor mat, tile or roll - although one of the main things you want to accomplish is protecting your concrete, the other would be to make the best looking garage possible. Sometimes you cannot get both so you sacrifice one thing to get the other. There are several options - tiles, rolls and mats. Tiles and Rolls act as a “so called” sub-floor. Tiles will allow liquid and air to flow in between the tiles at the connections, no matter how tight the fit (Most tiles will have a loose fit - this makes it better for riding over uneven or damaged floor, this is a good thing). They also sit up on feet, this creates a nice airspace between the concrete and the tiles, liquid flows and air is good for the concrete, but yes liquids do get in there. Most garages are made with a drain or angled to the front for drainage, so this should be ok for the floor. Now, Rolls are vinyl and lay right on the concrete and do not connect like tiles, so they don’t let liquids flow under it, this is great although it lays on the concrete and some say concrete needs to breath. With tiles you can create any size floor and with roll mats, they come in sizes made just for your area, this is nice because you simply unroll this vinyl covering and you have protected the concrete with a one piece mat, no seems or connection points. Beautiful and easy to clean, and yet made from a tough vinyl. You can get the same kind of roll mat look in a product that comes in about 2’x2’ tiles that have puzzle type connection around it. These look the same as some of the roll mats but connect to create whatever size floor you need. There is one other Tile to consider, this one has just the right size openings in it. Yes liquids and debris will go down and through, and also flow to the drain or out the front of the garage (as garages are slopped for that reason). Think about it, the concrete gets to breath, right? And, you get something the others do not give you. With the openings doing all that work, you do not track all that liquid and debris into the house, your garage will look cleaner too. These tiles are really neat because they come with built in expansion joints. All are great options, if you over analyze anything you can find problems, nothing in life is perfect.
